“Metal-first" mindset to be challenged as Nylacast appoints new CEO

“Metal-first" mindset to be challenged as Nylacast appoints new CEO

Nylacast Engineered Products Ltd.

Nylacast Group has appointed James Reeves as Chief  Executive Officer, marking the next stage in the company’s growth and its ambition to help  more engineers rethink material selection in demanding industrial applications.

Founded in Leicester in 1967, Nylacast is a long-established British manufacturer specialising  in precision engineered polymer solutions for safety-critical and performance-critical  applications. Its materials and components are used globally across sectors including marine,  energy, oil and gas, automotive, construction, transport, pharmaceutical, food and beverage,  and industrial markets.

The appointment reflects Nylacast’s confidence in the strength of its existing technical  capability and the scale of the opportunity ahead. As industries continue to seek lower weight,  lower friction, improved corrosion resistance, reduced maintenance, longer service life and  safer operation, Nylacast believes engineered polymers have an increasingly important role  to play.

James brings experience from advanced manufacturing, motorsport technology, additive  manufacturing and high-growth engineering businesses, with senior leadership roles across  organisations including Prodrive, voxeljet and Litecool. He is a Chartered Engineer and has  worked across automotive, aerospace, advanced materials, manufacturing commercialisation  and technology-led growth.

*Nylacast sees his appointment as an opportunity to combine almost 60 years of material  knowledge with a sharper global growth agenda and to extend the company’s long-standing  work helping customers evaluate alternatives to traditional material choices.

Nylacast’s Chairman, Mussa Mahomed said:

“James brings a rare combination of technical credibility, commercial ambition and growth  leadership. He understands advanced manufacturing, but he also understands the importance  of practical engineering, customer confidence and operational delivery. His appointment  reflects our belief that Nylacast has outstanding capability and significant untapped potential.”

In industry today, many engineering decisions still begin with a "metal-first" assumption,  despite decades of successful use of engineered polymers in demanding applications.  Nylacast continue to challenge that mindset by demonstrating where engineered polymer  solutions can outperform traditional materials in reliability, safety, wear performance, weight  reduction, corrosion resistance and maintenance-critical environments.

James Reeves, Chief Executive Officer of Nylacast, says: “Nylacast is not a business that needs reinventing. It already has world-class technical  capability, experienced, loyal people and products that continue to perform in extremely  demanding environments. The opportunity is to help more customers around the world understand why engineered polymers should not be treated as the alternative, but as the best  possible engineering answer.”

“Despite decades of proven performance in demanding industrial environments, the word  'plastic' can still carry a negative connotation in parts of industry. That is not what Nylacast  does. We are talking about engineered polymer solutions used in applications where failure  matters, downtime is expensive and maintenance access can be difficult or dangerous.”

Nylacast’s next phase will focus on strengthening customer engagement, building on its  international manufacturing base and making its technical proposition clearer to global  markets. The company will continue to support customers in applications where material  choice can directly affect performance, maintenance, safety and whole-life cost.

The appointment also comes at a time when manufacturing is often dominated by discussion  around automation, AI, robotics and additive manufacturing. Nylacast believes those technologies matter, but that some of the most significant performance gains still come from better engineering decisions at the start of the design process.

James Reeves adds:

“Advanced manufacturing is not only about adopting the latest technology. It starts with asking  better engineering questions. Why this material? Why this design? Why this maintenance  regime? Why this failure mode?

“Nylacast has decades of practical knowledge in answering those questions. My role is to help  the business turn that knowledge into faster growth, stronger customer engagement and a  clearer global proposition.”

Nylacast will continue to build on its position as an engineering partner for demanding polymer  applications, supporting customers where low weight, low friction, corrosion resistance, wear  performance, safety and reliability are critical.

Mussa Mahomed concluded:

“Nylacast has a strong legacy, but this appointment is about the future. We believe the  business is well placed to grow and continue influencing how engineers actively think about  material performance, while supporting a dynamic global customer base.”
